Kim – Day 204; 161 to Go
I saw an interesting program on TV. It was called, “What Would You Do?” It was a social experiment of how people would act if they were asked to help out a stranger or what would they do if they saw an injustice. One segment has a person walk up to others at a suburban gas station with a gas can in hand and ask to “borrow” a few gallons of gas. They did this when gas prices were at their high of over $4/gallon. It was interesting to me that when a young man asked, 30% of the time people gave him some gas. It was quite a bit higher when a woman asked. I suppose there is still some idea that women should always be helped. It was interesting to me that in one case a young immigrant man in an old beat up car who made only $300 per week, gave 5 gallons of gas to the actress pretending to need gas, even though she was driving an SUV that cost more than his annual salary. Some people have the natural inclination to help others. My take on it is, even if someone were scamming me I wouldn’t want to risk helping someone who might actually need the help. It would still be the right thing to do to help someone in need. Perhaps we should start by looking at those closest to us who could need a little help. I have often heard stories of my great-grandmother, who with 11 children to feed, still managed to always have an extra loaf of bread for the neighbor. My daily inspired thoughts.
